Power to Turn the World Upside Down

The Holy Spirit Series

Sermon Notes

“Silence in the face of evil is evil itself. God will not hold us guiltless.  Not to speak is to speak.  Not to act is to act.”

~Dietrich BonHoeffer

• In Acts chapter 4, Peter and John were apprehended and threatened for Preaching deliverance in Jesus’ name

Acts 4:23-31

23 And being let go, they went to their own companions and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said to them. 24 So when they heard that, they raised their voice to God with one accord and said: “Lord, Youare God, who made heaven and earth and the sea, and all that is in them, 25 who by the mouth of Your servant David have said: ‘Why did the nations rage, And the people plot vain things? 26 The kings of the earth took their stand, And the rulers were gathered together Against the Lordand against His Christ.’ 27 “For truly against Your holy Servant Jesus, whom You anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the people of Israel, were gathered together 28 to do whatever Your hand and Your purpose determined before to be done. 29 Now, Lord, look on their threats, and grant to Your servants that with all boldness they may speak Your word, 30 by stretching out Your hand to heal, and that signs and wonders may be done through the name of Your holy Servant Jesus.”31 And when they had prayed, the place where they were assembled together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness.

• When you are filled with the Holy Spirit, you should speak the word of God with boldness

Boldness Definition: Willingness to take risks and act innovatively; confidence or courage

• It is time for the CHURCH to come out of hiding

Acts 17:1-6 (NKJV)

1 Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where there was a synagogue of the Jews. Then Paul, as his custom was, went in to them, and for three Sabbaths reasoned with them from the Scriptures, explaining and demonstrating that the Christ had to suffer and rise again from the dead, and saying, “This Jesus whom I preach to you is the Christ.” And some of them were persuaded; and a great multitude of the devout Greeks, and not a few of the leading women, joined Paul and Silas. But the Jews who were not persuaded, becoming envious, took some of the evil men from the marketplace, and gathering a mob, set all the city in an uproar and attacked the house of Jason, and sought to bring them out to the people. But when they did not find them, they dragged Jason and some brethren to the rulers of the city, crying out, “These who have turned the world upside down have come here too.

• The power of God is for us to BE the Church everywhere
• Being the Church will cost you something
• Jesus constantly upset the status quo
• He challenged the prevailing wisdom of His day

Acts 4:31 (NKJV)

31 And when they had prayed, the place where they were assembled together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness.

• When you side with God, it makes the devil angry

Luke 4:28-29 (NKJV)

28 So all those in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath, 29 and rose up and thrust Him out of the city; and they led Him to the brow of the hill on which their city was built, that they might throw Him down over the cliff.

• The religious people got so mad that they wanted to kill Jesus
