“What Have I Done?”

Help, I’m Married Series

 Bishop W. Keith O'Neal

“If you don’t know the use of a thing, you are sure to abuse it”

                                                                                ~ Myles Munroe

  • The simple definition of abuse is abnormal use
  • First, we must embrace the parallel relationship between Husband and Wife and Christ and the Church
  • The whole context of this series is founded on the premise that we WANT to be in God’s will concerning marriage
  • Ephesians chapters 4 and 5, Paul talks about the Christian walk

1.             Walk worthy of your calling

2.             God has given the 5-fold ministry to mature the saints

3.             Don’t live like the unbelieving Gentiles (lewdness, uncleanness, greediness)

4.             Put on the new man created in righteousness and holiness

5.             Paul says, stop lying, stealing, dirty talking, evil speaking, but be kind and tender hearted, and forgiving one another

Ephesians 5:1-7

  • The same commitment, love, and care Christ gives to His Church, we are to have the same perspective in marriage
  • When God looks at your marriage relationship, He wants to see Christ and His Church

    Ephesians 5:22-24

  • This submission is both voluntary and heartfelt

    Ephesians 5:25-29

  • What we have done is entered a spiritual drama depicting Christ and the Church
  • Paul asks wives to submit to their husbands as their heads as the church submits to Christ as her head
  • He asks husbands to love their wives as Christ loved the church.

Ephesians 5:21

  • Husbands, you have agreed to act like Christ does toward His Church
  • Wives, you have agreed to treat your husbands like the Church treats Christ
  • We do it out of reverence for God and not based on the person

1 Peter 2:9-10

  • Husbands have agreed to give up YOUR life for your wife
  • She is chosen, royal, holy, and special

Hebrews 12:1-2

  • The joy for husbands is the saving of our wives
  • The joy for wives is the opportunity to be thankful for being saved
  • You don’t submit because your husband is perfect, you submit because your husband is Christ!
  • The Church obeys Christ in everything because of His sacrificial death

Genesis 2:24, Hebrews 13:5

  • Christ promised never to leave His Church
